The Baloch Vision
Syeda Mazhar

Facets like geography and history have always imprinted the demographical mosaic of a civilization. Vast and rocky terrain of Balochistan adorned with its coastal belt heralds the marches by Alexander’s army in 300 BC and its neat ranges yielded of the ‘Gandamak Treat’ tabled in 1879.

Being a gateway to a strategically important ‘Strait of Hurmoz’, Central Asia and bordering the two extremely important and politically unstable Islamic Republics; Balochistan has always been prominent for Regional Politics. Geography and courses of invaders have kept it a distant demography. Despite being sparsely dwelled and duely exploited, the religion and culture have kept the social bond in strength. Demography and absence of much needed awareness carved the roots of feudalism. With diminishing authority, the feudal and politicians are exploiting the Balochi youth by installing a politically motivated sense of deprivation. Only a small group of Balochs are taking part in anti-development activities for their vested interests, hence it is not justified to blame all Balochs, who have time and again proven their loyalty towards Pakistan. The promotion of the diversified rich culture of the Balochs serves as a priority of commemorating the day in various districts of Balochistan and also throughout the country. The vision of the said occasion is to celebrate the uniqueness of the culture and also to promote it and the Baloch language beyond the borders of Pakistan. With the aid of mass depiction of the Baloch traditions through various processions of youth, students and people from all walks of life publicize the distinctive Balochi dress, turban and embroided dresses. Various shows including musical programs are organized in different cities and towns of Balochistan, Sindh and Balochi speaking districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa paying a tribute to the Balochs who have always supported Pakistan in the past. Observing such occasions throughout the country is pretty much indicative of the fact that Pakistan stands united with the Balochs who have stuck to their traditions for generations. The yearly celebration of the strong traditions and cultural values that the Balochs hold incredibly dear to their hearts enabled them to keep their distinctive ancient cultural identity and the way of life without any modification to this day. For example, Baloch people have preserved their traditional dress with little change over the centuries. The Baloch men wear long shirts with long sleeves and loose pants. The dress is occasionally accompanied by a pagh (turban) or a hat on their heads. A culture that celebrates bravery, traditions, tolerance and love shines through the already incredibly rich heritage of the Subcontinent. As important a part of Pakistan as Balochistan is, recently it has been a cause of concern as the region has been infiltrated with militants that have been compromising the peace of the region. Another milestone this day is known for that last year the government of Balochistan province announced general pardon and protection to the Baloch militants as part of reconciliation process which led to many insurgents and their leaders surrendering their arms and deciding to work for the development of Pakistan and the province itself serving as a big step towards the restoration of peace in process. The civil, federal and provincial governments continue to make efforts for the restoration of peace in the province. Alongside the paramilitary committee that is to hold negotiations with the disgruntled elements, the Army Chief was also in the favor of the general pardon to the insurgents in Balochistan, mainly because of the development works including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which has a potential of bringing unlimited benefits to the province and its people. The Pakistan Army has made strenuous efforts for Balochistan. The progressive role is evident through various schemes and projects for the development of the region, likely to castigate the forgein conspiracy against the province. Pakistan has always had Balochistan’s best interests at heart. The Pakistan Army has always come to Balochistan’s rescue be it any natural calamities or militant insurgency. The real saviors of the people of Balochistan were Armed Forces which have always been quick to respond to the call of duty by extending a helping hand to fellow countrymen and have conducted exceptionally dangerous rescue missions and have provided relied to the victims.Pakistan’s responses towardsthpromotion of the narrative that Modi’s statements on Balochistan’s absolute pivotal part in the elevation of terrorism in the region, are tantamount to an admission of Indian interference in the troubled province. Production of evidence of Indian involvement in Balochistan also lies in the hands of the Army who arrested Kulbhushan Yadav in Balochistan last, claiming that he was an Indian spy.Pakistan’s pursuit of a wide set of actions – direct and indirect, covert and overt – available to it to confront and counter India, will likely gain momentum in the face of India’s evolving policy on Balochistan. Pakistan government and Pakistan Army assisted by China are executing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor which is the next big advancement in the region with the potential of further increasing the geopolitical and also economic importance of Balochistan in the Game plan.
